The Division II champs proved to have more weapons as the host Aztecs advanced to the SoCal Regional semifinals with a 25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15 victory over Division IV champion Madison on Tuesday night.
Second-seeded Montgomery (24-6) will host No. 3 Pomona Diamond Ranch in Division III at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“This is priceless, it’s icing on the cake, that’s exactly what this is,” said Montgomery coach Deborah Isaia. “This is something we’ve never experienced before so everyone is really excited. It’s nice to do it in front of our fans.”
The Aztecs controlled the match early, running out to victories in the first two sets.
“The start was very important. It set the momentum for the whole night,” said senior Trevor Jurlina, who led all players with 21 kills.
In the third set, Davon Lampkin (13 kills, 3 blocks) and Spencer Dowda (9 kills, 2 blocks) heated up for the No. 7 Warhawks as they clawed back into the match.
In the fourth set, however, the Aztecs raced out to an 11-3 lead and never looked back.
Montgomery’s service game was a big difference, holding a 17-0 advantage in aces over the Warhawks.
“We practice our serving a lot,” said Jurlina, who registered four of those aces. “We must spend at least an hour out of our three-hour practice every day.”
Jesus Rodriguez added 11 kills and four aces and Rene Vela also had four aces for the winners.
